The apostle John wrote three letters to first - century Christians to counteract the heresy of Gnosticism and to focus on what it meant to know God and walk in His true light. He contrasted light with darkness, truth with lies, love with hate, and life with death. First John, the first John's three letters, is one of the most simple, yet profound, texts in the Bible on walking in the light and in true fellowship with God through Jesus Christ.
John the apostle emphasizes that what we know is important. But more important is Who we know and how we live. Living in the Light will make it clear that knowing Christ
"because He laid down His life for us"
